About the artist

Born in 1939 in Palakkad district of Kerala, Akkitham Narayanan received a Diploma in Painting from the Government School of Arts and Crafts, Chennai (1961) under the tutelage of the then vice principal and eminent abstract painter K. C. S. Paniker. He then studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts, Paris on a Government scholarship (1967-70). He has won the Tamil Nadu State Lalit Kala Akademi Award thrice. He is the recipient of the IV International Festival of Painting Award, in Cagnes-sur-Mer, France. Narayanan’s works have been exhibited widely in India and internationally.

Narayanan’s creations are abstract in character, reflecting a deeper understanding of the nature and its varied colors and moods. The forms and colors that come repeatedly in his works remind the viewer of the chanting of a hymn, reverberating with the essence of life spirit.  The artist has been inspired and influenced by traditional Kerala architecture. His colors come from the mural paintings that had inspired him during his childhood

Narayanan is a founder member of Artists Handicrafts Association & Cholamandal Artists’ Village, Chennai. Narayanan received the state award of the Lalit Kala Akademi, Chennai, in 1963 and twice more in 1965 and in 1966. In between, he received the Association of Young Painters & Sculptors Award, sponsored by the Akademi in 1965 and in 1972, he received an award at 4th International Painting Festival, Cagnes-sur_Mer. Kerala Lalithakala Akademi awarded him the K. C. S. Paniker Puraskaram in 2009. The Akademi honoured him again with the Raja Ravi Varma Award to Narayanan in 2017.

Narayanan’s paintings are on display at various museums and galleries in many countries such as India, France, Japan, Poland and Germany. Narayanan lives and works in Paris.
