About the artist

Akbar Padamsee (born 1928, in Mumbai, India) is a contemporary Indian artist, graduated from the Sir J.J School of Arts in 1951. He is one of the generations of established artists who started painting before Indian Independence and was also closely associated with Progressive Artist Group. Akbar Padamsee constantly reflected on the relationship between form, colour, and space. He analyzed and confronted Western and Asian aesthetic theories while relentlessly exploring new forms of expression to create works of great intensity. His topics include landscapes, nudes, heads and he has done portraits created in pencil and charcoal. Padamsee’s pioneering spirit has allowed him to experiment with a wide range of media, from oil on canvas to photography and digital printmaking. He has held solo exhibition in New York, Montreal, London, Paris, Tokyo and Palo Alto, besides several in Mumbai and other metros in India. He has received the Lalit Kala Akademi Fellowship in 1962, and the Kalidas Samman in 1997. He was awarded one of the highest civilian honors by the Government of India, the Padma Bhushan in 2010.
