The human face is rarely just a portrait in Indian art; it is a map of history, a vessel for the divine, and a mirror of social change. Facing Tradition brings together a curated selection of master’s whose works define the trajectory of Indian Modernism. By focusing exclusively on the visage, the exhibition explores how the “Human face” has been a subject over 150 years—moving from the nationalist revivalism of the Bengal School to the structural deconstruction of the Progressives, and into the diverse narrative identities of the contemporary era.
