Somenath Maity

Born in 1960 at Midnapore, West Bengal Somenath Maity is recognized today as one of Bengal's important new emerging painters. He studied Fine Arts at the College of Visual Arts, Kolkata under the guidance of the senior and eminent Bengali artist, Shuvaprasanna and received a Diploma in Fine Arts from the Indian College of Arts and Draftsmanship, Kolkata. Landscape is the center point of attention in his paintings. Somenath’s colours and textures are strong, bringing to the forefront the life of the urban sprawls that he paints, and investing them with a force that works beyond the life of their inhabitants. His favourite occupation is to find the inner beauty that exists in every big city which most people don’t see or bother to look for, and then express it in his abstract oils on canvas. He builds up his paintings, all aptly titled "structure", one brush stroke at a time, almost as an architect would work on a blueprint for a building. He has held many exhibitions within India and abroad.
