About the artist:
Born in Howrah, West Bengal, Suvajit Mondal from an early age, showed a strong inclination toward creative expression. His formal artistic journey began with a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts from the Government College of Art & Craft, Kolkata, completed in 2013. He went on to earn a Master’s degree in Fine Arts from Kala Bhavana, Visva-Bharati University, Santiniketan, in 2015, during which he was awarded a National Scholarship from the Ministry of Culture, Government of India.
In the same year, Suvajit was selected for a student exchange programme at Burapha University, Thailand—an experience that broadened his cultural perspective and engagement with the world. 2015 also marked a significant milestone in his career when he received the 56th National Award from the Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi. He currently works from his studio, The Potter’s Life, in New Delhi.
Suvajit’s practice reflects his emotional responses to his surroundings, particularly the rapid urbanization of India’s capital. He views the human body as a microcosm of the city—where the skeletal system becomes infrastructure, the circulatory system echoes transport networks, and the nervous system represents communication. Over thirteen years, his work has evolved from simple vessel forms to complex sculptural landscapes that merge memories of West Bengal with contemporary urban realities.
