About the artist:

MF Husain was one of the most celebrated and internationally recognised Indian artists of the 20th century. He was one of the founding members of Bombay Progressive Artists’ Group (PAG). Known for his work as a printmaker, photographer, and filmmaker along with his drawings he enjoyed depicting the lively and free spirit of horses in many of his narrative paintings executed in cubist style. He was a prolific painter and his paintings depicted the icons of Indian culture through the ages seeking to capture the quintessence of his subjects, like M.K. Gandhi, Mother Teresa, the Ramayana, the Mahabharata, the British Raj and motifs of Indian urban and rural life. Husain was the first Indian modernist to become a household name and a star at the same time!

Husain was born (1915) in Pandharpur, Maharashtra. He picked up taste in art through studying calligraphy while he stayed at a Madrasa in Baroda. Husain attended the Sir Jamsetjee Jeejebhoy School of Art in Mumbai. Early in his career, he made a living by painting bill boards for films in Mumbai. The Government of India honored him with a Padma Shri (1955), Padma Bhushan (1973) and the Padma Vibhushan (1989). Government of Kerala conferred him with a Raja Ravi Varma Award in 2007.

Husain passed away at the age of 95 in London in 2011.
