About the artist
K.S Kulkarni was born in 1916 in Karnataka, India. The artist earned a Diploma in Fine Art (Mural) from Sir J. J. School of Art in 1940. He was the founder-president of Delhi Shilpi Chakra. Kulkarni’s art gradually evolved and was inspired by the decorative grace of the classical Indian figures in the Ajanta murals, Chola bronzes and the vitality of modernism. His works are focused on the Indian figure encapsulated with movement. In his own words, ‘My art springs from within and flows from my perception of the rhythm of life around me in the global context. All creativity is linked within and without.’ He was obsessed with its strange power of transformation or mutation in differing cultural context. He played with the sensuousness of colour and form to heighten the plastic potentiality of form. Kulkarni was a recipient of several national awards and his works were exhibited in India and abroad. K S Kulkarni passed away in 1994.
