Description

About the artist:

Jehangir Sabavala was born in Mumbai in 1922. He obtained his diploma from the J.J School of Arts in 1944. He studied in the Heatherley School of Art, London from 1945 to 1947, the Academic Andre Lhote from 1948 to 1951 Paris, the Academic Julian from 1953 to 1954 and the Academic de la Grande Chaumiere in 1957. Jehangir mostly worked in oils and was known for his landscapes. He practiced the modernist style creating wedges of paint which formed vast, still landscapes. The human figure which began to appear in a diminutive form, enveloped in solitude began to emerge in close ups and yet retain the distance of a remembered past. The receding planes gave each canvas an illusory sense of depth, illustrating Jehangir’s mastery over light, colour and texture. He was greatly inspired by Japanese and Himalayan art. He has held numerous solo and group shows in India and abroad. He was awarded the Padma Shri by the Indian Government in 1997. Jehangir Sabavala passed away in Mumbai in 2011.
