About the artist:
Shashidhar Gobbur is a visual artist based in New Delhi. Born in Gulbarga, Karnataka, he completed his Bachelor’s degree in Visual Art from the College of Visual Art, Gulbarga, in 2017, followed by a Master’s degree from the College of Art, New Delhi, in 2019.
Shashidhar’s practice revolves around the concept of the showcase and the objects it contains, a fascination rooted in his childhood home. There, a traditional household showcase displayed a carefully curated collection of personally significant objects—such as aquariums, tape recorders, and cherished cassettes. This assemblage reflects a cultural practice in Karnataka known as the “Gauri mada showcase,” where objects become repositories of memory and identity. Observing how these items changed over time, Shashidhar began to reanimate them through his art.
In his paintings, the showcase becomes a metaphor for life, while the objects within serve as vessels for emotions, memories, and lived experiences. Working primarily in oil on canvas, he renders both the showcase and its contents with meticulous realism. Distinctively, he brings together objects in unexpected combinations, blurring the boundary between reality and imagination.
Through this realistic yet imaginative approach, Shashidhar forges an immediate connection with viewers, inviting them into intimate narratives embedded within everyday objects. His work creates a visual and emotional bridge between memory, materiality, and audience, encouraging deeper engagement with the layered meanings each painting holds.
