Description

About the artist:

Amrit and Rabindra Kaur Singh, were born in 1966 in London. Often referred to as “The Singh Twins,” the sisters are based in Britain. They have adopted the language of Indian and Persian miniature painting to depict the complex urban and domestic landscapes of the contemporary world. The dual significance of their work lies in their determination to revive the dying tradition of Indian miniature painting whilst contributing to the enrichment and development of the British contemporary art scene. Their art comments on how religious icons have been replaced by secular ones in a materialistic world that, unfortunately, would rather have sports and pop celebrities as role models instead of the spiritual ones offered by world faiths. They had simply followed a long Indian tradition of using historical, symbolic art language to deal with contemporary issues within a secular context. The fusion of Asian and Western influence and their interest in global iconography has generated some fascinating juxtapositions in the Singh Twin’s paintings. The twins have exhibited their work to international audiences in Britain, Europe, India, and North America. Amrit and Rabindra Kaur Singh have received much recognition for their work, most notably, an MBE, Member of the Order of the British Empire, for services to the Indian Miniature Tradition of painting, in 2011.
