About the artist:

Born in East Bengal near Kotaliparha at Faridpur district (Bangladesh) in 1939, Jogen Chowdhury studied at the Government College of Arts and Crafts, Kolkata followed by studingy at the Ecole Nationale Superieure de Beaux Arts in Paris on a French Government scholarship. He is one of the foremost artists of post-independent India. Well known for his pen and ink drawings, masterly cross hatchings, calligraphic patterns and paintings in pastels, oils and watercolours, Jogen creates telling tales that seem to stem from Kalighat traditions, combining satire and anger, figuration with flora and fauna and real with imaginary in a fine sensibility and technique. He maintains the necessity of a uniquely Indian approach to art, as opposed to the blind aping of Western trends. His art is not only a form of self-expression but also a reflection of the collective and subjective consciousness that mirrors and comments on our contemporary society and life. He is the recipient of the Prix de France de la Jeune Peinture as well as the Havana Biennale Award. Jogen has exhibited widely in India and abroad.
