About the artist
SAKTI BURMAN was born in 1935 in Kolkata. He is one of the pioneering Post-Independence artists of India. Best known for his delicate marbling-like effect on canvas, we often get a feel of Renaissance frescos and Ajanta paintings. He amalgamates imagery from India and Europe and generates a fusion of Indian patterns with color preferences inherited from Fin-de-Siecle and Fauves. His paintings evoke a dreamlike look of time-encrusted fresco, while his sculptural works act as three-dimensional translations of his paintings. Engaging with grace and beauty, he creates a sense of tranquillity in his art.
