About the artist:
Born in 1939 in Gujarat, Manu Parekh is India’s best known contemporary artist. Manu completed a Diploma in Drawing and Painting from the J.J. School of Art, Mumbai, in 1962. With the influence of Rabindranath Tagore and F.N Souza, Manu sought to explore his inner landscape in his works. He is best known for his series on Banaras in which he depicts the colourful and zany “city of light” that never fails to inspire him. His landscapes are known for his intuitive use of colour, bold brushstrokes and prominent lines. The artist has experimented with colourful abstractions, sexual imagery, and figuration, responding as much to nature as daily life and social issues. He has held several solo shows and participated in a number of group exhibitions in India and abroad and his works are in several important public and private collections. Manu Parekh was honored with the Padma Shri in 1992, by the Government of India.
